Northern Shoveler ( 9 by 12" oil on panel) In Private Collection
This painting was created after I spent a spring morning photographing and watching ducks behind a small duck blind I had set up. The only ducks that were brave enough to come right up to the blind were Northern Shovelers. Some people may find them strange looking birds with such a long bill, in this painting I tried to hide the noticeable characteristic of them and draw a bit more attention onto the duck itself. I also painted this one in this pose to replicate in a way what I seen that morning when they would be headed straight toward my blind.
